game design* Career Pathway (IB)
Designers in the computer game industry understand and create 2D and 3D animation, storytelling, character development, audio and game technology. These same techniques are at work in training simulator systems, virtual shopping experiences, augmented reality and a number of other important career options. The Game Design Career Pathway at Marietta High School provides students with an understanding of the fundamental principles used at every stage of the game creation process, including game genres and modes of play, virtual character development, animation and level design to create virtual worlds. Students taking this program are strongly encouraged to add an internship to their curriculum which will give them real world experience understanding how the computer game industry works. After mastery of the standards in this course, students should be prepared to earn an industry-recognized credential in this career area.
To work in the computer game industry, one must usually have a bachelor's degree, generally in computer science, mathematics, or information systems. Some computer game designers take coursework in computer science while earning their degrees in accounting, finance and business. Some of those working as computer programmers earn an associate's degree or certificate.
