Business accounting* Career Pathway (IB)
The financial services industry includes a wide variety of occupational fields, such as banking, insurance, real estate, investment and personal wealth management. Students who participate in this pathway will receive first-hand knowledge of the industry and have a competitive edge in their post-secondary education. This program will enable students to think critically, analytically and creatively by gaining on the practical experience working with local Marietta community business leaders.
Choosing this pathway will lead you to a career (among many options) as any of the following:
*The Business Accounting program is "industry certified" by the Georgia State Council Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). An "industry certified" program has received a "stamp of excellence," which represents the apex of program quality. Only those programs that have successfully undergone rigorous reviews by leaders from business and industry are recognized with this distinction.
Business Accounting Course Schedule
Introduction to Business & Technology (IBT) – 2 semesters.
The course will help students build a strong knowledge base and develop management skills as they study forms of business ownership, functions of management, budgeting and finance, technology, communications, legislation, leadership and teamwork, marketing, and economics. Emphasis is placed on developing proficient fundamental computer skills required for all career pathways. Students will learn essentials for working in a business environment, managing a business, and owning a business. This course is the prerequisite for advanced courses in Administrative Support, Banking, Business Accounting & Small Business Development Pathways.
Financial Literacy – 2 semesters.
Prerequisite: Intro To Business & Technology
How money smart are you? Step into this course specifically designed for high school students to understand the importance of the financial world, including planning and managing money wisely. Areas of study taught through application in personal finance include sources of income, budgeting, banking, consumer credit, credit laws and rights, personal bankruptcy, insurance, spending, taxes, investment strategies, savings accounts, mutual funds and the stock market, buying a vehicle, and living independently. Based on the hands-on skills and knowledge applied in this course, students will develop financial goals, and create realistic and measurable objectives to be MONEY SMART!
Principals of Accounting – 2 semesters.
Prerequisite: Intro To Business & Technology and Financial Literacy
Where does all the money go? Principles of Accounting 1 is a skill-level course that is of value to all students pursuing a strong background in business, marketing, and management. Using financial information, students will learn how to make decisions about planning, organizing, and allocating resources using accounting procedures. Performing accounting activities for sole proprietorships and corporations following Generally-Accepted Accounting Procedures are included in the course. Students analyze business transactions and financial statements, perform payroll, and evaluate the effects of transactions on the economic health of a business.
Choosing this pathway will lead you to a career (among many options) as any of the following:
- Financial manager, loan officer, credit analyst or financial counselor who make recommendations and provide investment guidance for both individuals and businesses.
- Treasurer, comptroller or chief financial officer who plan and direct the financial activities for an organization at the highest level of management.
- Personal financial advisor who use their knowledge of investments, tax laws and insurance to help individuals plan for and reach their short and long-term goals.
- Actuary who predicts risk and liability based on mortality, accident, sickness and disability data.
- Insurance appraiser or adjustor who determine the extent of a company’s liability concerning personal, casualty and property loss or damage.
- Securities and commodities sales agents (stock brokers) who buy and sell securities in investment and trading firms, as well as advise individuals and businesses on stocks, bonds and market laws and practices.
